I haven't used the subsystems yet, but this option would certainly make me want to use it.

I'll probably tackle this along with issue #33 - I just have to decide whether to slip it into 1.2 or leave it for 2.0 / 1.3 (the latter being a migration release once I get 2.0 underway).
