I think the problem is that when the page sets a specific template for "this page", the PageProvider stops looking in the rootline at the very first page, making the value of "sub pages" empty if it is set to inherit. Hope that sentence computes ^^
The correct behavior would be to continue analysing the rootline until both fields have values, or the end of the rootline is reached.
