It seems like there's a good implementation in SciPy to calculate the distance transform of a bitmap. An effort to first implement the 2D LIDAR scan simulator will be done in the exp_py branch.

Looks pretty stable at the moment so closing the issue. Pickling an entire environment, and using callbacks for rendering is being tested right now. Closing.
