If you want to protect yourself from breakage of any future devices that we don't know about yet, the "right way" is to use the stop_modes attribute.

On the other hand, this may never happen, so you could take the easy way for now and leave yourself a note in the comments in case it ever does break. These values will probably always be the same for any motor that plugs into the output ports on the EV3. The only reason they might change is if you attach a 3rd party motor controller to to the EV3 that may have different functionality, like the HiTechnic motors that are used for FTC. mindsensors has some motor controllers as well. I haven't looked into them much, so I don't know if they would be different or not.
