Yeah that seems pretty reasonable! Is the "soft limit" usually configured separately from a "hard limit"? I can't remember how logback handles things specifically.

I think the hard limit is not strict. Each module except the last is reduced to one char at least and the last module (inner most) is never truncated.

Ah cool that makes sense. I think rather than special casing the normal length control formatters for the target and module paths, it might make more sense to add an optional length argument to them that behaves like the logback setup. {M(10)} would produce l::s::client while {M:>10.10} would still produce lettre::sm.
