This is not intentional, it just hasn't been updated. I'm happy to merge a pull request (or apply a git patch) which switches to a newer version of yasnippet.

Thanks, but I'm not much of an elisp programmer; messing with my init file is about
as brave as I get.
Maybe a real programmer will take up the cudgel.
