  1. If two residents are located together in a particular cell in one roster, and then located together in a different cell in the next roster, is it fair to assume that they were also in the same cell together in the interim? There are relatively few examples of this -- it happens about 150 times in the whole dataset. For example, SoNum P00069424 and SoNum P01034549 are both in 4N200 on 01/31 (the 24th roster) and in 4N12 on 02/04 (the 25th roster).

From Anne:

Some answers, starting with Feb 24 email:
2 cells are marked as ‘Padded’ (3LD60 on 10/27/2021 and 3LD82 on 01/16/2022). Are these cells geographically separated from the other 3LD[#][#] cells? Are there other padded cells in the data that are not marked as such?

The padded cells are geographically distant from other cells, on 3 south. The psych patients in these cells would have little interaction with others during the days while they are having their psychotic/depressive symptoms. There are only a couple of padded cells.

South annex residents:
After admission at Rice street, persons identified as female at birth are bussed down to South Annex, usually within the first 24 hours, as long as they don’t need infirmary care.

H# is the intake unit for south annex, geographically separate from the rest. Women may stay here briefly or for long time. Also, they sometimes transfer people from the long term housing units to H unit later.

I think A-D (?) is in one wing, E, F,G, I is in the other wing. F wing is an honor dorm, with more programming. Some of the other dorms are mental health dorms and the women have to sit in the common areas together for group therapy sessions.
Letter][#][#] (e.g., A20)
i. These locations appear throughout the more recent data (from 01/12/22 onwards) for female residents
YES
H[#] (e.g., H3)

Regarding --Robertson, Freddie Jerome (SO Number P01007978) has Gender = “M” from 10/27/2021 to 01/31/2022 and Gender = “F” on 02/04/2022. Is this intentional?
--where are they housed? South annex or in one of the upper floors of the Rice Street complex? I’m wondering if this may be a transgender individual? A quick check might involve looking at the patient on the internet “inmate finder” website—are they housed in men’s facility but is the mug shot of someone who presents themselves as female? On the other hand, this may represent a typo

MA[#][#][#] (e.g., MA217) I think these are new arrivals at Rice Street.
Central Release, in center of complex, between north and south, on second floor.
Intake: this is an annex off of south tower. Very distinct movement in and out of this area, can consider another building
Central Holding, Medical Holding Weekender (Intermittent), In Transit Cell—let me check out details…

Some further information from Anne on 4 (bullet points 1 and 2) above:

  • medical/central holding are temporary locations in intake for persons who become residents; these can be treated as separate areas before they enter the cells
  • In transit may be excluded from analysis (these may be transfers to other facilities); same goes for the other categories
  • The 3LD cells are similar to the response to question 2 above: separate medical/psychiatric areas that should be considered as distinct from the rest of the jail, with mixing within area (there are some cells here but also a lot of movement in and out of the cells).
