Application not showing up through i3 about j4-dmenu-desktop HOT 4 CLOSED

Please check if the environment variables are the same in both cases by comparing the output of

export

in a shell and the output of something like this via i3:

bindsym $mod+d exec export | xmessage -file -

from j4-dmenu-desktop.

This is what I am getting when I'm trying to run j4 straight from the console while logging through lightdm:

Seems like some locale issue.

Please check $LC_ALL, $LANG and so on, also check output of locale. At least one of these is probably set to some strange / invalid vlaue.

Turns out it was indeed a locale issue with LightDM.

I had to add these lines to /etc/environment:

LANG="en_CA.UTF-8"
LC_ALL="en_CA.UTF-8"
