Update:
After #362 has been merged, we have feature_fedpeg.py which is practically a copy of pegging,py, but adapted to having another elements chain as a parent chain.
By "forward-porting" the diff from pegging,py to feature_fedpeg.py one should be able to create a pr getting rid of pegging.py.
A custom binary parameter and a parent_type={bitcoin,elements} would be needed, since the configurations for the nodes are different depending on the type of parent chain.

Yeah, I think what really really fixes it is #418 but is merged too now.
