That's not currently supported.
Just curious, why do you need to know if the message was stored in the broker or recently published by a client?
from mqttools.
For example, I write an application that logs all MQTT messages to SQLite database. And I don't want to save bunch of current stored retain messages at app startup, only incoming new ones.

Ok.
I'm not sure how to implement this. The most straight forward is probably to replace the topic and message tuple with a message class, but that is obviously not backwards compatible. Not that I care too much about backwards compatibility as the project is young, but would be nice not to break things.

There are now two ways of doing what you want:
-
Subscribe as
client.subscribe('#', retain_handling=2)
, orClient(subscriptions=[('#', 2)])
. -
Override the
on_message(...)
method on the Client class. See https://github.com/eerimoq/mqttools/blob/master/examples/on_message.py for an example.
