@AlexCuse we encountered this issue before, and the resolution is to use the latest version of paho.mqtt.golang.
There are some known issue about this situation and have been fixed.

This ends up a little awkward because the connect handler passed to the paho client needs a reference to the outer client, but I think it will work: AlexCuse@b931465 I need to do a little more work to get a logger in but it should be in good enough shape for me to test - I need to integrate with the branch from #75 before I can test but should be able to do it over the weekend.
