Interesting discussion on pdx-osgeo about this ... https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/pdx-osgeo/Zmq27dhyUH4

My impression is that, while we have the vocabulary to tag new feeds with location, nobody actually does it. The comment from Justin's friend at http://managingnews.com/ was telling:

Nobody tags stories. Even after you write the semantic location extraction system (or just use geonames) you quickly find that putting mainstream new stories on a map, simple doesn't turn out to be that useful. Which is a real heart breaker.

Of course hyper-local stuff does turn out to be awesome, which is why things like foursquare and waze work so well. Short descriptions of places or events that are essentially tied to place and can be easily confirmed by other users == awesome. ...and those postings come with a place, because most people are posting from a gps-enabled phone, etc...

Live Twitter data is getting pulled now: 71efaae
We will have to work to get a better filter for content in place, as well as pull only tweets with actual gps coords (right now I'm pulling all and filtering the rest out).
@perrygeo says that a man at SciPy has a better system working for this - It would be awesome to see how he's doing this, though likely to use the streaming API, which may require some certs work on our end as I think the streaming API requires https.

May also want to look at http://blog.cartodb.com/twitter-maps/ for inspiration or even for use in locus.
