I think this could be timing. MailScanner automatically reloads periodically, I believe. I wonder if this has something to do with it? I will move the cron to a 5 min schedule to try to trigger the same problem. Also, it appears the failure didn't trigger the second attempt?

yep it appears to be timing, at least on my end.
Also, mailscanner init script is not setting RETVAL on failure
Fixing this will allow the retry routines to proceed.
Adding a modification to build.bash for this
