Hey there! Your are certainly correct, and this is a design choice, not a bug. colnames are used throughout the package to ensure proper matching of metadata/colData and/or expression data. I think in most cases you will have colnames for any SCE/Seurat, as these typically map to cell barcodes and AFAIK are created in all typical single-cell pipelines upon object initialization. But I could make a note of this requirement in the documentation.
