I tried [email protected] which seemed to have the same UI lock. More investigation is required.

I spent a fair bit of time switching between Primus and SocketIO and upgrading modules. None of these had any effect on the timeout problem. What did have an effect on the timeout issue was deleting the nedb data directory and trying the page load again. This leads me to believe that it is an issue with nedb being slow to retrieve records in a lengthy datastore (metadata). I am switching to mongodb to counter this slowness.
Also, the UI should not lock when a database lookup is being performed. If this UI lock persists after switching to Mongo, is there a better way to go about making a non-blocking request? Serviceworkers?

After switching to mongodb in bfefead, the problem seems to have cleared. Closing for now.
