That's a great question. Version 0.3.9 has just been released with a new feature called "placeholder" (242e24a) that displays an element when a template has no clones. It uses the data-placeholder attribute to identify the associated template.

The documentation is not yet ready, but you can fiddle with an example at:
http://jsfiddle.net/14jpt22g/

Note that while the feature is ready to use, the implementation needs performance optimizations and animation improvements.

I'll leave this issue open for a while in case anyone has ideas on improving the feature.
