Always using self.finders made things easier. IIRC, things broke because CachedS3BotoStorage (from the docs) doesn't implement an "exists" method, but we had S3 configured as the default storage and this is probably a bad idea (now we tell explicitly in the models when they should use S3). For us, always using self.finders works fine, but I am not familiar enough with staticfiles or storages to tell if this is bad in production. If nothing else, having settings.DEBUG affect library behavior as little as possible seems preferred (in this case, use the same strategy for finding files in development and production).
