Also I should add that these are my settings
django_compress settings
COMPRESS_OFFLINE = True
COMPRESS_STORAGE = "common.common_storages.CachedS3BotoStorage"
COMPRESS_ROOT = "media/"
COMPRESS_URL = STATIC_URL #http://cdn.mydomain.com/ which points to the amazon bucket
AWS_STORAGE_BUCKET_NAME = "prod-static-mydomainbucketname"

Also FYI, I'm not using memcache I'm using django.core.cache.backends.locmem.LocMemCache, Could that be the issue?

I solved this problem looks like it was an environment issue. If debug is set to False, and the files aren't accessible rather than outputting the original files or throwing an exception it swallows the exception and doesn't render out anything:
