The subfigure package is (as we know) considered obsolete, supposedly succeeded by the subfig package, though both had their last updates as long ago as 2005. I tested subfig on a small example. It works but IMHO adds unnecessary overhead and potential for mistakes. In particular I do not like the fact that \subref{...} inside the main caption needs to be \protect-ed. We should reconsider ...

This problem appears again and again - time to take counter measures. I suggest to block the subfigure package from being loaded.
