You shouldn't do this.

You should be moving your .npmrc / node_modules into a folder like ~/.npm

Then you should be setting your prefix in npm to ~/.npm

You can now globally install with npm install -g <package>, without sudo, and it will be saved into ~/.npm/node_modules

You should not be chowning files in /usr/

If this issue still isn't resolved, you should check out this article on the subject. I'm up and running with virtually no issues. Also, technically, this isn't an issue related specifically to this generator, so @psimondk I'd suggest you stick to stackoverflow where you'd get quicker/better answers anyway.
