There's going to be more explanation about this in the "getting started" tutorials, which I'm about to commit. I'll think about rewording this section too. Thanks for raising it.

I've just looked at the page, and the paragraph for 'social network integration' reads as follows:

Diaspora* lets you stay connected with your friends, even if they're not yet on Diaspora_. Simply connect your account to other major services, then use Diaspora_ as your home base to post to your profiles on these other services too. Diaspora* currently supports cross-posting to your Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts, with more to come soon.

This seems pretty clear to me. Are you not seeing all of this text?

I am seeing it, but I don't think it's clear. Or rather, it may give a false impression. When I looked at different alternative social networks when I wanted to leave Facebook, I tried to find out how good they were with integrating other / legacy networks like Facebook or Twitter. Pretty much all the open source social networks are really bad at telling you what their integration with FB really does. For example, Friendica has a pretty good bi-directional FB integration, but it's actually deprecated and can stop working any day.

The sentence "Diaspora lets you stay connected with your friends", I though it meant something more substantial than just posting to these other services, for example chatting with my FB friends or reading their FB comments on Diaspora. This does not work and will probably never work, so I would make not want to mislead anyone and be extra clear that this is just a way of posting from D* to these services, nothing else.

TL;DR: I don't like the "Diaspora* lets you stay connected with your friends, even if they're not yet on Diaspora* part, because it implies two-way connectivity.

OK, I see where you're coming from. I'll think about whether there is a lack of clarity and if so, how it can be improved. You're welcome to make suggestions yourself, or even change the file (config/locales/en.yml) if you want.

By the way, there is a long-running issue about increased integration with Facebook here. You might find it interesting. I'm not sure whether it will get anywhere, but I reckon with JS widgets it should be possible to pull in posts from Facebook and Twitter streams client-side, if that is considered a desirable feature.

Would have to go through Loomio IMO.

@rogerbraun I have changed the paragraph about social network integration to:

Use diaspora* as your home base to post to your profiles on other major social services. This way your friends will still be able to keep in touch with what you’re up to, even if they’re not yet on diaspora_. diaspora_ currently supports cross-posting to your Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr accounts, with more to come.

I think this is a bit clearer about what is and isn't possible.

I have attempted to address this issue (text in previous comment). Unless @rogerbraun still feels there is a problem, I think this issue can be closed.
