Hi Sören, we previously ran the TeaStore with the Istio service mesh, so in theory, this should be possible.

In general, this sounds like there might be some networking issues where pods can not communicate with the persistence or the persistence can not connect to the database container. My initial theory would be that the persistence can not reach the database as this would cause the recommender/imageprovider to stay in the generating/waiting state and the persistence to be unreachable. Since you are getting the generating/waiting state, this means that the pods can communicate with the registry so there seems to be some network connectivity.

You are already on the right track, that the next step would be to check the logs of the persistence container. Here, it's quite odd that only the tomcat logs show up. Could you post an example of what the persistence logs currently look like?

Hi Simon, sorry for the late reply. We got OSM working with some trial and error (and expert knowledge from @benediktwetzel). Specifying an appProtocol in the database service did trick. I will open a PR once everything's working as expected.

Looks like the SLF4J messages are the reason why no logs regarding the database connection are showing up.

Hi Soeren, great to hear that you guys got it working with OSM 👍 A PR that adds compatibility with OSM would be much appreciated!

Regarding the logging issue, there are quite a few logs missing that should come up on every start of the persistence service. At first glance, it looks like you are correct and there is something wrong with our SLF4J logger that prevents logs from being written.

My first assumption would be that we broke this when we did the version bump for many outdated dependencies. I'll validate whether the other services also do not provide any logs and look into fixing this sometime next week hopefully.

After looking at this, I can currently not reproduce the issue. If I run a naked persistence container, I get quite noisy logs about it not being able to connect to the database. Could you maybe check if you can reproduce the issue with the missing logs by deploying only the persistence container?

On a side note, the SLF4J error message seems to be caused by our Kieker integration and is not related to application-level logs. I've reached out to the Kieker team on how to best address this.

Further, I've looked into what's causing the following warning and was able to get rid of it :)

But these logs don't seem to be application-level, are they? For example, I would expect to see logs such as those:

(Correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't looked into the TeaStore call graphs in detail and was only expecting to see such logs.)

Alright, after looking into this, it seems like it was the SLF4J warning after all :) Adding Kieker as a dependency caused slf4j to be initialized earlier than expected when the logging implementation is not available on the classpath yet.

I've pushed some changes on the dev branch to hopefully fix this. Could you test if using the newest containers with the :development tag resolves the issue? Then I could push out a new release that contains this fix, as the missing logging fix is something that we should get into the main branch asap :)
