Thank you for the comment! I believe the floating box is not in error. This algorithm works on a layer-by-layer basis. Once a layer is complete, the algorithm treats the ceiling of that layer as the floor of the next layer. That floor is treated as solid even if there isn't really anything there from the underlying layer. Does that explanation help at all?

EB-AFIT starts layerInLayer (packing within layers) if the layer height has to be increased due to placing of larger box in current layer (step up). We will need to implement the same when a smaller box is added instead in the current layer (step down) to pack the gap created by this step down. Has someone attempted this ?
