I'd definitely accept a patch that allowed turning on GFM as a runtime option if it was in C :) I don't want to strap too much Ruby on top of the discount library. A C implementation could possibly get accepted upstream too.

It looks like discount handles the foo_bar_foo case already.
That really just leaves the 'in very clear cases, let newlines become <br /> tags' feature.

I opened up a ticket upstream to try and get some guidance and information on where in the discount code such a thing would make sense (or if it would at all).

GFM extensions are available in Discount 2.1.5a. And therefore will be available in RDiscount 2.1.5 eventually.

@cactus: It's not clear to me what exactly you're asking for in this issue. What specific parts of GFM markdown are you hoping to use?
