Thank you for your suggestion and for the detailed justification! We're not going to make this change. This library is designed to support educational goals of teaching data science, and we have pedagogical reasons for preferring density rather than counts as the default. I realize this is a different default from pyplot.hist(). "percent per unit" is accurate; the area of the bar corresponds to the percentage, so if the x-axis is measured in meters, then the y-axis is measured in "percent per meter".
