This may be caused by upgrading for a much older music21 version and not getting these environment keys; if you could send a pull request that fixes it, that'd be great. Lilypond does not output to musicxml.png; lilypond uses 'lily.png' -- musicxml.png is used if you have a musicxml reader that can automatically generate png files. MuseScore works well for me. The documentation for the keys can be improved, definitely

That makes sense, since my ~/.music21rc file was first created before v1.0.

Whether or not that's the cause of this problem, it seems the best solution is to check whether a user's config file has all required keys during installation and upgrading. Or maybe to raise an exception when looking for a key that isn't there, to warn the user they should add the key manually.

Definitely a best practice -- one of a number of things we've known about for some time, but limited resources have prevented doing it. Would appreciate the help.
