I think if you explain that promises are supposed to be immutable, that'd make the light bulb go on for most non-newb js devs.

Good call. I vote for small blurbs about both returning a new promise and being immutable.

This wiki page talks about promises being immutable (see the promise states section), but maybe should mention it in the API doc, too?
