Alternatively, we could keep the previous JSON around; i.e. don't rm -rf work/ && mkdir work in the build prep; print something like "Resuming build ${buildid}" if the commit matches?

Re-using the work dir sounds OK though I'd be worried down the line of inadvertently reusing other things not meant to be re-used. I guess we can do rm -rf everything except compose.json?
