for that particular action I just use coreos-assembler shell today and perform the operation manually.

I think init has too many things it does that we either want to turn off sometimes or force others. It might be good in the future to be able to specify exactly what steps we want it to take via the command line call and have each of the steps well defined.

Yeah something like that. For example rpm builds have a bunch of stages today and you can rpmbuild -ba for build all or you can just specify which stages you want to execute. So something similar, along with docs could be useful.
