Yeah, this should be reported to Spark and if anything would be a bug on Kafka, not this repo. StringDeserializer does implement the Deserializer interface, so this is likely an issue with classloading in Spark.

As mentioned above, you should check with the Spark project if that's the context you are using this in. If they use classloading, then it's possible to accidentally share across classloaders in an incompatible way, such that you are using the StringDeserializer which implements classloaderA's Deserializer interface against a client built using classloaderB, in which case they aren't actually compatible (despite possibly being the exact same underlying class & version, they are considered independent).
