I have no feedback from other users, there have this problem.
Maybe you have a other plugin, like BackWPup, that remove this mode?
I have a option for other plugins and database tools to do this?

I used to have it, but once I disable the scheduled backup - the problem still exists.
Also even when BackWPup is deactivated - the MM plugin still switches off by itself.

Can you check how long is the plugin active?
Can you also test without all plugins and with a default theme, like Twenty Ten.
I can't find a problem in this topic :(

I have a new site install running on Twenty Twelve which has done this (another site, running another theme, also did this). It does have BackWPUp running but no back-up was performed at the point Maintenance Mode stopped blocking access to the actual site (BackWPUp is running weekly backups & was fine at the point the last was completed but access to the site was allowed today without my being logged in but the next backup hasn't run yet).

FYI the other plugins running on there are 'WordPress SEO' & 'Wordfence Security'. Indeed them running at the mo' so can't test on there with them turned off I'm afraid.

BackWPup have a function for de-/activate the WP Maintenance Mode. Maybe this is a problem in your problem install. Can you remove all options of BackWPup and reinstall. I think, that BackWPup since version 3* had fixed the bug of this topic, but not sure. My plugin check a option inside the table options of wordpress install. This option is a single entry and usable from other plugin and themes to set or deactive the maintenance mode.

Thanks bueltge, it's a fresh install done last Thursday so I'd be surprised if it's ever been older than version 3 of BackWPup to be honest, it was installed immediately. I do seem to recall doing a version update of it yesterday but I think that was an increment of 3?

I've never actually had the "Activate maintenance mode on database dump" option enabled if that's the one you're referring to?

"Activate maintenance mode on database dump"

Is this a option inside the BackWPup; i'm current not sure ;)

The problem for me is, that I have no chance for debug or other idea. I have no customer or install, there have this problem.

Maybe you can check for different times the entry in the options tabel wp-maintenance-mode-msqld. If this entry on 1 , then is the maintenance mode active.

WebPropelled avatar WebPropelled commented on August 16, 2024

Yeah that's the BackWPup option I was presuming is the "de-/activate the WP Maintenance Mode" one you were referring to.

OK well I'll see if I get opportunity to test it if/when it occurs again in future & will check on that table entry. As I say it's occurred a couple of times now, on different sites. However once I try to fix the problem (by toggling manually 'Plugin Activate' False, saving, then back to True & saving, & repeat) it seems to remain corrected.

...ahh, hang on I've just tested it again & it appears to be related to logging out. It was all working fine on this particular site again, but on logging out it's now again remained visible to all... hmm, but rather stupidly I've not checked the table before rectifying it again in a hurry.

Anyway, I'll see about checking that table entry next time it occurs. It's a shame as your plugin proves very useful for me, it's a core part of my site build work flow so is very much appreciated, but I'm losing faith that I can actually trust it to be restricting site access at the moment & that's (unsurprisingly) absolutely critical in my use of it.

Thanks for your help. For easier check the table entry I use the plugin Adminer, works inside the backend of WordPress and make it easy to find a item and his content.

I think we have found the bug. BackWPup clean up the database after a backup for more performance etc. and clean also the entry for active maintenance mode. The next version will fix this.

Good stuff thanks Frank, I'll keep an eye on it & be sure to report back if it plays up again :)

Thanks again for feedback.

....it's just happened on this site again & I'm afraid I don't think it is what you've mentioned. It seems to me it may be something which is triggered (or fails to be) by logging in or logging out (it's occurred doing this as Admin or Editor so far). Unless BackWPup does something at that point I don't think it's that (it only runs on this install in the middle of the night). Could be cookie related?

This time on it occurring I checked the table mentioned above, & it reads as '0', but the setting for the plugin within WordPress shows 'Plugin Activate' > 'True'... :o/

bueltge avatar bueltge commented on August 16, 2024

Ok, I will check again the source, that all check use the same value form this option field. But the plugin don't use cookies or other thinks in this topic.
