Apparently the "Knee-Deep in ZDoom" issue is a known problem in the zdoom community. Using Graf Zahl's knee-deep release fixes the problem:

Brutal Doom: currently can fix texture issues by changing options to "use shaders for lights." Would be nice if the textures were fixed without having to change the display options.

Version 1.8.6_b fixes the brutal doom problems.
And Winter's fury seems OK now too.
I don't seen any problems in Putrefier. I'm unsure whether we carefully documented what those problems were.
I WONTFIX the kneedeep problem; because it is not gzdoom specific.
