It looks like the source of issue (consisting of the .gitignore file, the >100M file from the Next compiler, and the initial commit) is upstream in create-next-app. I've created vercel/next.js#6558 to inquire about it and a resolution.
I'll close this for now. But if the problem is not resolved in create-next-app, and it doesn't turn out to be a mistake on my end, it would be nice for C3 to provide a workaround (perhaps just a custom .gitignore in the Next template?) or make a note of it in the docs.
