Additionally http://rubyforge.org/projects/geoip/ says "GPL v3"

from geoip.

cjheath avatar cjheath commented on September 5, 2024

It's GPL - because it's a rewrite of the GPL C code from Maxmind.
The Rakefile is wrong - it came from "newgem" generator.

I'm interested in packaging this for Fedora. Would you mind clarifying the license of this package? README.rdoc and geoip.rb say "GPL v2.1 or later", but the Rakefile says "MIT".

Thank you for the quick response, and the fix (in a383c06)

The GPL v2.1 does not exist. Is it possible that the Maxmind code was referring to the LGPL v2.1, which does exist? Is their code still available online somewhere? A quick browse of their homepage didn't give me anything.

cjheath avatar cjheath commented on September 5, 2024

Correct, it's LGPL v2.1. The full text of the license agreement is in this tarball: http://www.maxmind.com/download/geoip/api/c/GeoIP-1.4.2.tar.gz.

I've updated the README and pushed to github. Do you need the gem re-released as well?

The next "natural" release is fine by me. Thanks for your quick response!

geoip.rb still contains the GPL text. Would you mind correcting that also?

cjheath avatar cjheath commented on September 5, 2024

Thanks. The error had persisted from Maxmind's original code. Although the stated 1.4.2 tar no longer exists at that URL, I have a copy, and the error had been corrected by then. Now the geoip licence text should be all consistent with that version.

Would you mind issuing a formal release through rubygems.org with these changes? That will ease the review process as I submit the package to Fedora.

Done - as release 1.2.2
