I think it depends on how Mastodon implements this π.
I've seen cases when I start following someone, Mastodon immediately backfills the whole timeline (I find this weird because that means it's not cached for a long time? π€·ββοΈ). I haven't really test unfollowing cases.
Despite that, Phanpy doesn't cache the timeline on local, unlike how mobile/desktop apps work (thus no read/unread state, no timeline syncing, etc). The moment you refresh from start, everything comes fresh again from Mastodon's API. Do note that the "freshness" of the items in your timeline also depends on federation stuff between instances π
from phanpy.
