Actually your solutions seems like the right thing to do.

I could still add an option. I'll leave this request open and wait if other people would like something like this, too.

Fair enough. The reason I suggested this feature is to avoid redundancy for the heading and for the heading level and to keep my templates as clean as possible. I you not add this feature I will just patch it in myself.

I decided not to change anything. This is the same behavior for any command using a \section* internally.

BTW: hyperref should be called after acro. Actually hyperref should be called after most packages: http://tex.stackexchange.com/q/1863/5049
