It sounds like the gltf created from within obj2gltf was not able to recognize the data for some reason and did not write out a buffers object to the glTF before going through the gltf-pipeline.
You could possibly try using the major-cleanup branch here and see if there is any difference. This branch is a rewrite of the obj parser and may have fixed any issues. It should also be ready for a PR into master pretty soon if you don't mind waiting for that.

Thanks! Unfortunately now it is "message: 'normalized result is not a number'". Will try to improve the obj.
