Nothing comes up, its just a blank view and its not the text color, there is literally nothing in the view

I use this class with IB as well. Please double check the outlet instance and make sure the text is being set.

is there anyway to implement this without using IB and do it programmatically instead

Yes, all classes that work in IB can be instantiated programmatically (hence initWithCoder:).
