Good idea.
I'd like to keep all the Talisker related env vars prefixed with TALISKER_, would TALISKER_VERSION work for you?

I think TALISKER_VERSION could be misleading, one might expect it to signify the version number of Talisker itself. Maybe something like TALISKER_VCS_ID or TALISKER_REVISION_ID? Although it would also be nice if its name was similar to the name of the file... so it's your call.
