How are you extending the controller AND model?

public $uses = array('Users.User');

This will use the User model from the plugin in your new controller and not your extended model.

I think the section in the readme.md is pretty clear about this: https://github.com/CakeDC/users/tree/2.0#extending-the-controller You're just using another model.
