Thanks for reporting this.
I have the feeling it is a problem with the fonts of your linux box.
It will vary depending on your linux distro and the terminal you are using. I have one RPi at home (running Debian, and I use gnome-terminal), so I will run a test and check if it works or not.

OK, so it has to do with me running termsaver from the login prompt. Once I load the X window system it works fine. IS there a way that I can get termsaver to load the japanese characters without starting window manager? I use termsaver as an actual screensaver to keep the console from burning into my television.

Yep, I just checked and you are write... it does not handle unicode without X.
It looks like the vt (virtual terminal) does not handle unicode by default, but I could not find any trace of how to solve it... I tested with jfbterm (runs a different terminal session still under vt), and then it worked. So my guess is that there must be a way to tackle the font configuration to accomplish the same without using anything else...
For now, this should work (or using X with a very light window manager: I would recommend i3wm).
Pushed a question, see if anyone helps on it:

By the latest research on this, for the moment I am leaving this closed, as there aren't many options out there to handle this, but jfbterm technically solves it well.
If any other ideas show up, feel free to reopen this ticket at any time.
