Ah right. Yes, the idea is that your input Secret is a fully-formed k8s Secret API object (with apiVersion, kind, metadata.name, etc) - and not just the secret data. I can see how this will be a common misunderstanding however.
I will add better input validation so I can give a clearer and earlier warning in this situation. In particular, it makes zero sense to have a missing metadata.name in the input.
Separately, I can see that a version that requires only the data will be nice for many situations. I need to know the intended namespace/name, so I will need to add more command line flags, etc for this case.
