Ok, for the sake of completion, and hoping this could help someone else, the libbinacpp.so provided somehow created the problems with the libcurl library.
After much permutation, I cleaned the binacpp lib directory using the makefile and rebuilt the binacpp lib from scratch and voila!, no more segmentation errors making a first call to the curl library. I also can use the libbinacpp.so library as a library and no longer have to include the binapp.cpp into the project. It sems that the provided libbinacpp.so file either is corrupt or built for a specific distro, I am running Ubuntu.
