I'm having a similar issue - pies are not drawn at all if a parent is hidden, and I'm drawing them spread across various tabs (bootstrap), so they are often hidden. I guess the solution is to connect the 'shown' event of the tab to the 'change' method on the pies, but it would be nice if that was built-in on a show/hide basis.

This is odd, I wouldn't have expected the visibility of an element to affect any change events. I'll have to look into it.

Closing this as your work-around of showing the parent before changing the chart's values works.
