@jxnblk This seems to have been introduced in 8.0.6. The variable definitions set in :root are missing in the compiled basscss.css file, but the variable references still exist in the stylesheet.
I noticed the postcss-remove-root plugin was referenced (https://github.com/basscss/basscss/blob/master/postcss.config.js) which I thought rewrites css variables on compile, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

So... any progress on this? It's definitely a breaking issue

As far as I can see, in the latest version released yesterday (https://unpkg.com/[email protected]/css/basscss.css) the missing PCSS variables are added back. It seems it was solved in this PR #267
So I guess this issue is solved and can be closed right?

Yes, it should be fixed in the latest version, but feel free to reopen if the issue persists
