@paulmey looks like XMLName is mostly unnecessary unless we're parsing an element that is deeper than the root object.

yes, indeed it is. We don't need any XMLName fields in structs used for unmarshal only. For marshal, only the top-level struct needs to have an XMLName and only if the name of the root element does not match the struct type name or if the root element is in some XML namespace. (which most Azure objects are)
