Yes, the UI isn't updated when you press an emoji button. Though the delegate methods log the corresponding emoji pressed. The delegate also specifically differs for, when the user presses the backspace button. Hope it helps. :)

Is there any way to set the initial page the user sees to be page 1 instead of page 0? The history page is blank when it first appears so its kind of confusing for first time users.

I believe resigning the firstResponderStatus from your UITextView should do it.
