The code parameter must include the bucket name and key. See the Lambda example "Creating a Lambda Function" in http://docs.aws.amazon.com/sdk-for-ruby/v2/developer-guide/lambda-recipes.html.

As I said, I had used the s3 bucket + s3key when I had already manually uploaded the zip file to s3 and it works.

But if you specify just the data_file (for uploading a local zip file) without the s3 bucket and key, you got the error that the uploaded file could not be unzipped.
If you added the s3 stuff, you got

Error during creating lambda function: Please do not provide other FunctionCode parameters when providing a ZipFile

I had also used the AWS lambda console to upload the zip file directly and it works.
Reading from its uploaded S3 location also works.
So the zip file is a valid one.
