Are you sure? I just looked at the API, https://docs.aws.amazon.com/cognito-user-identity-pools/latest/APIReference/API_SignUp.html, and the regex is [\w]+, which means [a-zA-Z0-9_]:

• Any lowercase letter
• Any uppercase letter
• Any digit
• The underscore character

I don't see the at sign (@) anwhere. I also don't see a dash, so replacing '@' with '-at-' should not be legal according to the API docs. I'll contact the Cognito writer.

It seems like Cognito creates a UID username from the email address. But it definitely complains if you opt to use email "as username" and then try to sign up with testuser-at-example.com.
