I think this is fixed as of Simperium/simperium-android@bdc4db8. Can you confirm at your convenience @tomwitkin?

I'm not set up to build the app (I failed to get it working with Android Studio). Based on the screenshots I saw earlier, I'm not sure this fixes it. The bad kerning is the weird letter spacing of the word "password". I've also seen this in other apps, so I'm not even sure it can be fixed since this seems like a system thing

Yeah, it is indeed built in as the 'hint' attribute of an EditText. Going to close this one for now.
